She was the wife of **Dr. Emmett James Aeneas Mullally**, with whom she raised six children. Although historical census records primarily identify her as a homemaker, family recollections reveal a woman with considerable artistic interests, an independent spirit, and an active involvement in property transactions. Mary Etta worked in both oils and watercolours, producing landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. Several of her paintings remain in the possession of descendants. She was herself born a Mullally, and the precise genealogical relationship between her family and that of her husband remains an outstanding question. ===== At a Glance ===== ^ Detail ^ Information ^ | **Full name** | Mary Etta Mullally (also recorded as Mullaly) | | **Born** | 11 October 1875, Montreal, Quebec | | **Died** | 12 March 1959, Montreal, Quebec | | **Parents** | James Mullally (1842–1921) and Mary Ann Grannell (1844–1926) | | **Spouse** | Dr. Emmett James Aeneas Mullally (married 27 June 1906) | | **Children** | Jessie Rosalie, James Emmet Oliver, Mary Patricia, Eileen Isabel, Brenda Beatrice, Anne Jean Etta | | **Known interests** | Oil and watercolour painting, property investment, fashion | | **Burial** | Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery, Montreal, Plot P02032 | ===== Early Life and Family ===== Mary Etta Mullally was born on **11 October 1875** in Montreal, Quebec, the daughter of **James Mullally** and **Mary Ann Grannell**. Her father, born around 1842, and her mother, born around 1844, were members of Montreal's Irish Catholic community. Mary Etta had an older brother, Patrick Thomas Mullally (1874–1875), who died in infancy. She consequently grew up as the family's only surviving child, consistent with recollections preserved by her descendants. The 1881 Canadian census places Mary Etta in **St. Mary's Ward, Montreal**, while the 1891 census records her living in Ste-Marie Ward, Montreal Centre, as an unmarried daughter in the family household. She was again recorded as unmarried and living with her family in the 1901 census. Her father died on 13 March 1921, followed by her mother on 7 July 1926. ===== Marriage and Family ===== On **27 June 1906**, Mary Etta married **Dr. Emmett James Aeneas Mullally** in Montreal. Her surviving artwork includes still lifes, landscapes, and portraits of family members. According to family recollections, her subjects included arrangements of flowers and fruit, as well as scenes of Montreal. Several of her paintings and watercolours remain in private family collections, offering tangible evidence of her artistic interests and abilities. Although no formal exhibition history has yet been identified, her work has been compared by descendants to that of other Montreal women artists of her period. ==== Surviving Paintings and Sketches ==== The following works have been identified through family recollections: * **Floral and fruit still lifes:** Watercolour paintings depicting arrangements of flowers and fruit. * **Montreal landscape:** A painted landscape showing a scene in Montreal. * **Portrait of Peter Gruner:** A portrait of Peter, son of Peter Hamilton Gruner. * **Unfinished portrait of a granddaughter:** A sketch begun shortly before Mary Etta's death, now preserved by the granddaughter who sat for it. * **Additional oil and watercolour paintings:** Various works retained in family homes. The dates, dimensions, media, and signatures of these paintings have not yet been catalogued. ==== The Unfinished Portrait ==== One particularly personal surviving work is an unfinished sketch of Mary Etta's granddaughter. The granddaughter recalled that Mary Etta had painted portraits of other grandchildren, including at least one of her brothers. Wanting a portrait of her own, she asked her grandmother to paint her as well. Mary Etta began a sketch but died before she could complete it. The unfinished work remains in her granddaughter's possession, preserving both an example of Mary Etta's artistic process and a personal memory of their relationship. ===== Property and Business Interests ===== Although recorded as a homemaker in contemporary census documents, Mary Etta is remembered within the family as a resourceful woman who took an active interest in **purchasing and managing property**. According to family oral history, she acquired several properties during her marriage to Emmett. One frequently repeated family story describes her placing property documents beneath other papers requiring her husband's signature. Emmett, reportedly trusting his wife and not examining every document carefully, would sign the papers without always realizing that another property purchase was being arranged. The story was remembered with humour by later generations and suggests that Mary Etta exercised considerable initiative in the family's financial affairs. The legal circumstances surrounding these transactions have not yet been established. Married women's contractual and property rights in Quebec were historically restricted, but the precise implications for Mary Etta would have depended on the applicable law and the couple's marital property arrangements. Further investigation of Montreal land and property records may help establish the extent of her investments and whether the properties were registered in her name or that of her husband. ===== Personality and Family Recollections ===== Family recollections describe Mary Etta as a woman with a keen sense of fashion, an independent spirit, and a distinctive personality. One granddaughter fondly recalled an occasion when Mary Etta defended her choice to wear a scarf around her neck rather than over her head, declaring it the more fashionable style. The granddaughter remembered feeling understood and supported by her grandmother. Mary Etta reportedly disliked being photographed, although several photographs survive in family collections. She was also remembered for her unusual discomfort around birds. ===== Death and Burial ===== Mary Etta Mullally died on **12 March 1959**, at the age of 83, at **St. Mary's Hospital in Montreal**. An obituary published on 13 March 1959 identified her as the beloved wife of Dr. Emmett J. Mullally and named their six children. Her funeral arrangements included a requiem Mass at **St. Patrick's Church, Montreal**, followed by interment at **Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery**. She was buried in **Plot P02032**. Her husband, Emmett, survived her by approximately six years, dying in 1965. ===== Historical Significance ===== Mary Etta's life illustrates aspects of women's experiences within Montreal's Irish Catholic community during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. While official documents identify her primarily through her family relationships and household occupation, family recollections point to a life involving artistic production, financial initiative, and an enduring influence on her descendants. Her surviving paintings provide an opportunity to study the creative work of a woman whose artistic contributions may otherwise have gone undocumented. Similarly, family accounts of her property interests raise questions about the ways married women participated in financial and business decisions within Quebec's historically restrictive legal environment. Together, these records and memories offer a portrait of a woman whose activities and interests extended beyond those documented in conventional genealogical sources. ===== Sources and References ===== * **Canadian Census Records (1881, 1891, 1901, 1911, 1921, 1931):** Household, residence, religious affiliation, and occupation information, as summarized in the Ancestry family history profile. * **Marriage record, 27 June 1906:** Marriage of Mary Etta Mullally and Emmett James Aeneas Mullally, Montreal, Quebec, as recorded in the Ancestry profile. * **Death notice, 13 March 1959:** Contemporary obituary identifying her death at St. Mary's Hospital, surviving family, and funeral arrangements; reproduced in the Ancestry profile. * **Family oral history, October 2026:** Recollections of a granddaughter concerning Mary Etta's artistic work, property interests, personality, and family relationships. * **Surviving family artwork:** Oil paintings, watercolours, portraits, and an unfinished sketch preserved in private family collections. * **Find a Grave Memorial — Mary Etta Mullaly:** Burial information at Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery. ===== Outstanding Questions ===== * **Mullally family connection:** How was Mary Etta's father, James Mullally, related to Emmett James Aeneas Mullally's ancestral line? * **Artistic training:** Did Mary Etta receive formal instruction in painting, or was she largely self-taught? * **Artistic associations:** Was she associated with any Montreal art societies, exhibitions, or informal painting circles? * **Surviving artwork:** Can her existing paintings be photographed, dated, and catalogued for the family archive? * **Property ownership:** Which Montreal properties did Mary Etta reportedly acquire, and what do surviving land records reveal about these transactions? * **Photographs:** Can surviving photographs of Mary Etta be digitized and identified by approximate date? generation_2/2_2_mullally_mullally/mary_etta_mullally.txt Last modified: 2026/10/20 04:10by bethanybouchard
